El Paso Municipal Rose Garden is undoubtedly breathtaking, especially for those like me that love nature. The best time to go is between March and April when it is still cool and the flowers are at their peak. However, it is very relaxing, great for short walks or just sitting and enjoying the quiet while birds are chirping. Just don't forget to bring water and sunblock. It's hot outside! The Garden is typically open between March and November.
The abundance of flowers and "Florecitas" inspired this week's Puerto Rican dessert.
Florecitas ("little flowers") are sweet vanilla gem icing cookies founded over 150 years ago in Yauco, PR. The cookies are bite-size and are topped with a drop of icing in different colors. The cookies come in an orange tin. (Illustration on the right).
My sisters and I used to eat these at my grandparents' house, who carried them constantly. The best way to eat them was to remove the icing from a few cookies and eat those icings with one whole cookie at a time.
Dessert: Sugar cookie topped w/a gem (drop) garden meringue cookies.
